MILAN - The Indonesian Premier League is the top tier of football in Indonesia, or their equivalent of our Serie A. The 2011/12 campaign - which is still in progress - is the inaugural season for the IPL after it replaced the Indonesia Super League, with the number of participating teams reduced from 18 to the present 12.
However, professional football is something that has been embraced in Indonesia since 1930 with the founding of the Football Association of Indonesia (PSSI), 15 years before the country's independence. The PSSI joined FIFA in 1952 and the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) in 1954.
